A Back-to-School Message for Students
Just like that, summer break is ending for most students. Whether it’s the start of school (pre-K & Kinder) or returning to school through 12th grade, it’s time to re-set for success.
Here are some tips:
———- K-8 kids ———
Parents need to help with the following:
Set routines for the start of the day. Make chalkboard checklists to visit with them to help them stay on track.
Set after school routines that include a 15-30 minute re-set break when they walk in the door. Time to greet the dog, flip on their bed or grab a snack
Set a bedtime routine: Prep backpacks, sports bags, snack bags & things needed for the next day to avoid the morning scramble.
Set a bedtime & put devices on charges in parents’ room
—— COLLEGE STUDENTS ——
You have conquered high school & been admitted to a college or university. You will be exercising SELF-MASTERY. Creating your own routines regarding class attendance & study time, choosing friends & organizations to join, managing your laundry & room space as just a few.
I want to also share some tips I would give MYSELF if I were starting now. Hindsight is 20/20, but you can use this now!
Also be open to new experiences/opportunities. Say YES unless there is a really good reason to say no.
Get to know your professors. They are the gateway to the inside track opportunities that don’t get published.
2. Network! Get to know your classmates, especially those with future plans. Be inclusive. You never know who you can help in the future or vice versa. Relationships are EVERYTHING!
3. Don’t carry dead weight. That’s not your job! If someone can’t seem to get it together or is always whining, you may need to move on to a new friend group & be “BUSY”
4. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you feel lost. Whether it’s tutoring, counseling, personal training etc. No one expects you to know everything. Let those who KNOW do their jobs.
5. When you have the opportunity to help someone who looks lost or needs encouragement, step up. Your kindness will return to you 100-fold!
Remember, no matter what others are doing, this is YOUR opportunity & future. Take it by the horns & maximize it!
Super excited for you!
